Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.5 inches (9–14 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and gracile with relatively short limbs. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to blackish-brown, often with a faint coppery or reddish sheen along the vertebral region. The dorsal surface is typically unmarked or may exhibit faint darker mottling. A pale or yellowish dorsolateral stripe is present on each side, running from behind the eye to the base of the tail, though this stripe may be indistinct in some individuals. Costal grooves are well-defined, typically numbering 12–13 between the front and hind limbs. The tail is compressed laterally and comprises approximately 45–50% of total length. Skin is smooth and appears slightly glistening. The venter is pale gray to cream, often with a slight olive or brownish wash, and may be faintly spotted or flecked with darker pigmentation. Inhabits cool mountain streams, seepage areas, and riparian zones in deciduous and mixed forests, typically at higher elevations. Associated with areas of persistent moisture, leaf litter, and rocky substrates near flowing water. Diet consists of small invertebrates including mites, springtails, and small insects.
