Hynobius fucus
Quick ID
Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.5 inches (9–14 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and somewhat compressed laterally, with relatively short limbs and a moderately long tail. Dorsal coloration is typically dark brown to blackish-brown, often with a slightly lighter vertebral stripe or series of spots running along the midline. The dorsal surface may exhibit fine flecking or stippling in lighter brown or tan. Lateral surfaces are somewhat lighter, often gray-brown or tan. A subtle light line or fold may be visible along the side. The head is relatively small and pointed. Costal grooves are well-developed, typically numbering 13–14 between limb bases. Skin is smooth and moist. Ventral surface is lighter, ranging from pale gray to cream, often with dark spotting or mottling, particularly along the throat and belly. The tail is slightly compressed and lacks a prominent fin. Primarily inhabits cool, shaded streamside habitats, seepage areas, and damp forest floors at moderate to higher elevations in Taiwan, typically associated with flowing water and dense leaf litter. Diet consists of small invertebrates including insects, mites, and other arthropods, foraged among mosses and leaf litter.
