Nanhu Salamander
Hynobius glacialis
Quick ID
Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.5 inches (9–14 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and gracile with relatively short limbs characteristic of the family Hynobiidae. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to nearly black, often with a faint bronze or copper sheen along the vertebral region. A narrow, light-colored vertebral stripe may be present, running from the head to the tail tip. The dorsal surface is marked with fine granular texture and may display subtle flecking or mottling. The head is small and relatively flat, with small eyes. Costal grooves are prominent, typically numbering 13–14, which are useful diagnostic features. The tail is slightly compressed laterally and comprises roughly 45–50 percent of total length. Ventral surface is lighter, ranging from pale gray to cream, often with fine dark speckling. Skin is smooth to slightly granular. A highly specialized and geographically restricted salamander, Hynobius glacialis is endemic to high-elevation alpine meadows and cool mountain streams on Taiwan's Nanhu Peak and surrounding montane regions above 3,500 meters (11,480 feet). Prefers areas with moss-covered rocks, dense vegetation, and clear, cold water sources, as it is highly sensitive to temperature and moisture conditions. Diet consists of small arthropods including mites, springtails, and tiny insects obtained through active foraging in leaf litter and moss.
