Field Notes

A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–4.5 inches (9–11 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and graceful with relatively short limbs and a moderately long tail. Dorsal coloration is uniformly dark brown to blackish-brown, occasionally with a subtle bronze or coppery sheen on the head and anterior body. The dorsal surface is typically unmarked and uniform, lacking distinct patterns or conspicuous spotting. The head is small and flattened, with a pointed snout. A narrow, dark vertebral stripe may be faintly visible running the length of the back in some individuals. Costal grooves are prominent, typically numbering 13–14 between the forelimb and hind limb. The skin is smooth and moist. Ventral surface is uniformly dark gray to charcoal, unmarked and unornamented. Limbs are short and slender with well-developed digits. This species is endemic to mountainous regions of southwestern Honshu, Japan, and is found in cool, clear mountain streams, spring seepage areas, and adjacent wet soil habitats within dense deciduous and mixed forests at elevations of 300–1200 meters (1000–3900 feet). Terrestrial even in adult stage, though closely associated with water. Diet consists of small invertebrates including mites, small insects, and aquatic arthropods.
