Hynobius leechii
Quick ID
Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.0 inches (8.9–12.7 cm) in total length. Body is gracile and elongate with relatively short limbs characteristic of the family Hynobiidae. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to nearly black, often with a fine, somewhat indistinct lighter vertebral stripe running along the midline from head to tail. Dorsal surface may exhibit subtle flecking or stippling in lighter brown or tan. The head is small and somewhat flattened, with small eyes. A prominent costal groove is present on each flank, typically visible as a distinct line running the length of the body between the limbs, usually counting approximately 13–14 costal folds. Skin is smooth and somewhat glossy. Ventral surface is uniformly dark gray to blackish, sometimes with lighter mottling. The tail is laterally compressed and tapers gradually to a point. Limbs are relatively short and weak, with toes reduced in number and webbing minimal or absent. Typically inhabits cool, forested streamside habitats, often found beneath stones, leaf litter, and rotting logs in proximity to flowing water or seepage areas. This species is endemic to the Geoje Island region of South Korea. Diet consists of small invertebrates including mites, small insects, and other arthropods.
