Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.0 inches (8.9–12.7 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and gracile with short limbs. Dorsal coloration is variable, ranging from dark brown to nearly black, often overlaid with a fine, cloud-like or misty pattern of lighter gray or tan reticulations and flecking that gives the species its common name. The pattern is diffuse and lacks distinct spots or stripes. A faint vertebral stripe may be present in some individuals. The head is relatively small and pointed. Costal grooves are prominent, typically numbering 13–14 between the limbs. Skin is smooth to slightly granular. The tail is compressed laterally and comprises approximately half of the total length. Ventral surface is dark brown to gray, often with lighter flecking or a mottled appearance. Limbs are short but functional, with well-developed digits. Primarily inhabits cool, montane forests, particularly in areas with dense moss, leaf litter, and proximity to seepage areas and small streams. Often found beneath logs, rocks, and decomposing vegetation in moist microhabitats. Diet consists of small arthropods, including insects, mites, and other invertebrates.
