Field Notes

A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–4.5 inches (9–11 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and gracile with relatively short limbs. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to nearly black, often with a subtle reddish or copper tint along the vertebral region. The dorsal surface may exhibit fine flecking or a slightly granular texture. A faint light stripe or line may be present along the dorsolateral region in some individuals. The head is small and slightly flattened. Costal grooves are well-defined, typically numbering 13–14 between the front and hind limb insertions. Feet are small with reduced webbing. Ventral surface is dark gray to black, sometimes with lighter flecking or spotting, particularly on the throat and belly. Skin is smooth and moist. Tail is moderate in length, slightly compressed laterally. Primarily inhabits cool, forested stream valleys and seepage areas in montane regions, often found in leaf litter, under logs, and in moist soil near flowing water. More aquatic than some congeners but retains terrestrial habits. Diet consists of small arthropods, including insects, mites, and other tiny invertebrates encountered in leaf litter and soil.
