Quick ID
Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.5 inches (9–14 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and gracile with a relatively long tail comprising approximately 50% of total length. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to nearly black, often with a distinct russet or reddish-brown vertebral stripe running from the head to the tail tip. Flanks are slightly lighter, typically dark brown or gray-brown. The head is small and somewhat flattened, with a pointed snout. Costal grooves are prominent, typically numbering 13–14 between the front and hind limbs. Limbs are short and slender, with the adpressed front limb extending nearly to the adpressed hind limb, a characteristic feature of hynobiids. Digits are small and unwebbed. Skin is smooth and slightly glossy. Ventral surface is dark gray to blackish-brown, often with a lighter vertebral stripe. The tail is laterally compressed and lacks a fin edge. Primarily inhabits cool, shaded stream valleys and ravines in forested regions, often associated with mossy banks, leaf litter, and areas near small springs and seepage areas. Typically found at moderate to higher elevations in mountainous terrain. Diet consists of small invertebrates including insects, mites, and other arthropods.
