Senzan Salamander
Hynobius senzanensis
Quick ID
Field Notes
A small, slender salamander typically measuring 3.5–5.0 inches (9–13 cm) in total length. Body is elongate and gracile with relatively short limbs characteristic of the genus Hynobius. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to blackish-brown, often with a narrow, lighter vertebral stripe running from the head to the tail tip; this stripe may be cream, tan, or yellowish and is sometimes faint or broken. The dorsal surface may be marked with scattered lighter flecks or small spots, particularly along the sides. Lateral surfaces are slightly lighter than the dorsum. Costal grooves are typically prominent, numbering approximately 13–14 between the limb bases. Dorsolateral folds are absent or extremely faint. Limbs are short and relatively weak, with digits that are typically four on the forelimbs and five on the hind limbs. Skin is smooth and moist. The tail is somewhat compressed laterally and may show faint banding or lateral striping. Ventral surface is pale gray to cream, often unmarked or with sparse pigmentation. Eyes are small and relatively proportionate to the head. Endemic to the montane regions of central Japan, this species inhabits cool, moist forest floors, seepage areas, and streamside microhabitats, often associated with decaying leaf litter, moss-covered logs, and areas with persistent moisture. Primarily feeds on small invertebrates including mites, tiny insects, and other micro-arthropods encountered while foraging in leaf litter and soil.
