Hynobius sonani
Quick ID
Field Notes
A small lungless salamander typically measuring 3.5–4.5 inches (9–11.5 cm) in total length. Body is slender and elongate with relatively short limbs. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to nearly black, often with a subtle reddish or copper-tinged vertebral stripe running the length of the body. The flanks are slightly lighter, ranging from dark brown to grayish-brown. A faint dorsolateral stripe may be present along each side. The head is small and somewhat flattened, with tiny eyes adapted for low-light conditions. Costal grooves are distinct and number approximately 13–14. Skin is smooth and somewhat glossy, lacking obvious granulation. Ventral surface is dark gray to black, sometimes with a faint mottling. The tail is laterally compressed and constitutes roughly half of the total length. Digits are short and unwebbed. This is a fully terrestrial species with no aquatic adult stage. Inhabits moist, cool montane forests, particularly in areas with dense leaf litter, mossy substrates, and proximity to small streams and seepage areas at elevations of 1,200–2,400 meters. Primarily nocturnal and cryptic, spending most of time beneath logs, leaf litter, and moss. Diet consists of small invertebrates including springtails, small insects, and other arthropods encountered in the leaf litter and soil.
