Quick ID
Field Notes
A medium-sized, slender python typically measuring 24–36 inches (61–91 cm) in total length. Body is relatively slender and cylindrical with a moderately defined head. Dorsal coloration is highly variable, ranging from uniform dark brown, olive-brown, or blackish to bright yellow or greenish, often with subtle longitudinal striping or darker flecking along the dorsal surface. Some individuals display a more uniform coloration while others exhibit faint banding or reticulated patterning. The head is distinct from the body with a narrow snout and large eyes with vertical pupils. Scales are smooth and glossy. Heat-sensing pits are present along the labial scales, characteristic of pythonids. The tail is prehensile and often lighter in coloration than the body. Ventral surface is typically cream, yellow, or pale brown, sometimes with darker mottling. Juveniles resemble adults but may display more contrasting coloration patterns. Primarily inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, and rocky hillsides in the Lesser Sunda Islands, often found in areas with dense vegetation and shelter among rocks and fallen logs. Primarily nocturnal and cryptic. Diet consists of small mammals, birds, and occasionally lizards, subdued via constriction.
