Field Notes

A large, heavy-bodied constrictor typically measuring 48–72 inches (122–183 cm) in total length, with some individuals exceeding 96 inches (244 cm). Body is robust and muscular with a moderately broad head. Dorsal coloration is highly variable, ranging from tan, golden-brown, olive, or dark brown to nearly black, typically overlaid with a series of darker brown or black crossbands or blotches that may be narrow and well-defined or broad and diffuse depending on individual variation. The pattern often includes chevron-shaped markings along the dorsum. A prominent pale vertebral stripe is frequently present running along the midline of the body. The head typically displays a distinctive pale (cream to yellow) postocular stripe or band extending backward from the eye. Scales are smooth and somewhat iridescent, with prominent heat-sensing labial pits along both the upper and lower jaw margins. The ventral surface is cream to yellowish, often with brown or gray mottling or patterning. Juveniles resemble adults but often exhibit more contrasting patterning and may be somewhat more brightly colored. Primarily inhabits rocky outcrops, cliff faces, kopjes, rocky valleys, and mountainous regions throughout sub-Saharan Africa, often found in areas with accessible water sources. Frequently discovered near human settlements and agricultural areas. Highly adaptable to various terrain types. Diet consists primarily of small to medium-sized mammals, including rodents, shrews, hyraxes, and small primates, as well as birds, other reptiles, and occasionally larger prey items when available, subdued via constriction. Occasionally consumed by humans in some regions.
