Quick ID
Field Notes
A small, flattened tortoise typically measuring 3.5–5.1 inches (9–13 cm) in carapace length. Carapace is oval and slightly depressed, with a distinctive radiating pattern of light-colored lines emanating from the center of each scute, resembling a spider web—hence the common name. Dorsal coloration is dark brown to nearly black, with the light radiating lines creating a striking geometric pattern that is particularly prominent on the costal and vertebral scutes. The carapace surface is smooth to slightly textured. Plastron is yellowish to tan with dark brown or black markings, typically featuring a dark central blotch on each scute. Head and limbs are dark brown to gray. Scales are small and exhibit fine texture. Hind limbs are sturdy and adapted for terrestrial locomotion. This species is one of the smallest tortoise species in the world. Primarily inhabits dry, rocky scrubland and sandy areas of southwestern Madagascar, where it shelters in leaf litter, rock crevices, and sparse vegetation. Diet consists of low-growing vegetation, grasses, succulents, and occasionally fallen fruits and carrion.
